Stuck in Traffic

Here is part of What's Wrong with the World: Massive traffic jams. And it's getting worse. Commuters are wasting the equivalent of one to two weeks a year stuck in traffic. "Drivers waste nearly an entire work week each year sitting in traffic on the way to and from their jobs, according to a national study released Tuesday." You can read about it here.

The upside is that people may begin to appreciate the landscape, which in our hurried driving lives we've come to see as an inconvenience between us and Wal-Mart.

But the people weren't complaining about the traffic on their way to the shopping mall. Rather they were tired of the time wasted stuck in traffic merely going to and from work.

Fair enough. I've been late to work because of traffic, which is annoying. My excuse is always the wise words of Evelyn Waugh: "Punctuality of the virtue of the bored." Then again, the wasting time in traffic is rather boring.

I'm not sure most managers are ready to accept the wisdom of Waugh. Wasting time in traffic has little to recommend it, except as an inducement to patience.
